Lift lighter weight
I recently joined a new gym and it got me thinking.
For me personally, the goal has always been better health, more strength, and a better physique.
Here’s what I realized: if you’re motivated by others (like I am) you have to get around them to feed off their energy, use their strength as inspiration, if you will.
The internal dialog goes something like this for me:
“That person looks very strong. I want to be very strong. I need to lift heavier stuff.”
Correct, to some degree, but what we often fail to acknowledge is the thousands and thousands of repetitions that got them there.
And if we pick up what they’re lifting there’s a good chance we’ll do some permanent damage, and probably be massively discouraged from wanting to try again.
Same goes for anything else. You start weak.
When we’re afraid of looking weak, we don’t lift anything at all.
Here’s the beauty of it: anyone who’s done it understands the journey. You don’t need be afraid of looking weak in front of these people, they’ve been where you are, they are where you’re going, and they can help you get there.
Anyone who hasn’t been there, doesn’t understand the journey. You don’t need to be afraid of looking weak in front of these people, because they aren’t going where you’re going, and they can’t help you.
If you’re trying to get stronger at anything, the same rules apply.
If you’re already strong, encourage the weak.
