Complexification
There are two ways to play the communication game:
1. Making things complicated to impress your peers.
2. Making things clear to impress your customers.
Few people do this well because they’re afraid of appearing to oversimplify something in front of other people that have a deep and nuanced understanding.
But, if your objective is to help people (and make a living in the process), you’re listening to the wrong opinions.
Writing a 10,000 word article on the nuances of your practice might get the attention of a firm that’s competing with you, but it won’t get a customer to write you a check.
I can tell you with 100% certainty, the content I have published that used metaphors that would not impress my peer group has brought me more new business than anything else.
