Rust
“Everything yields to diligence.” — Antiphanes
The longer I go without writing regularly, the worse I get.
We have the tendency to believe our skills are just “on hold” when we’re not using them, but that’s not true.
A year or so ago, I committed to sending a daily email in an effort to cultivate an ability to write well on demand. I kept it up for about 2 months, then got distracted by something. I now don’t recall what that thing was.
Whatever it was, it definitely wasn’t worth the equity I gave up in my ability to write.
I’d have been 300+ emails sharper if I didn’t let that habit lapse.
“Rusty” is a great metaphor for the state we end up in when we sit back and let nature take its course.
Let your skills rust or polish them, there is no in between.
Yours rustily,
